Mr. Robert Naething, a member of the Senior Executive Service, serves as the Deputy to the Commanding General of United States Army North (Fifth Army) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. U.S. Army North is charged with planning and executing of operations in support of U.S. Northern Command in the areas of Homeland Defense, Security Cooperation and Civil Support. His focus is on strategic requirements and resourcing of the command as it serves simultaneously as a Joint Force Land Component Command, Army Service Component Command and Senior Command of Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis.
He previously served as the Director of the Mission Command Capabilities Development Integration Directorate at the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he led the development of future capabilities required for commanding and leading formations in the U.S. Army. Other assignments at Fort Leavenworth include, Acting Deputy to the Commanding General, U.S. Army Combined Arms Center; Director of Senior Executive Service, Mission Command Capabilities Development Integration Directorate; and Director of Mission Command Center of Excellence.
Mr. Naething, a graduate of the U.S. Army War College, retired from the Army as a Colonel in 2010. A Calvary Officer, he has commanded at the Squadron, Battalion, and Regimental levels in various locations throughout the world including deployments to Operation New Dawn, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Desert Thunder, Operation Desert Thunder II, Operation Desert Fox, Operation Desert Storm and Operation Desert Shield. His awards include the Superior Civilian Service Medal and the Legion of Merit.
